The method involves generation of control signals for the end stages (10,10'). An over-voltage state of one of the end stages is determined. The end stage in question is switched to a discharge mode for a limited time period. At least one further end stage is switched to charge mode for a limited time period. A control module for carrying out this process has at least one key input for determining the over-voltage state. It also preferably has at least one charge signal input. Also disclosed is a power amplifier with several end stages connected in series at the output. The amplifier is connected to a control device as described above for controlling the end stages.
