A process monitors and controls a biological aerobic water treatment process and plant by using the decomposition rate of the micro organisms as an indicator.An up-to-date set of microorganism substrate decomposition parameters is determined by means of a program (1). A set of parameters is generated using data gathered over a long period of time and processed by a program (II) to describe the average rate of micro organism substrate decomposition. Determn. of the microorganism decomposition rate is made which is characteristic of natural undisrupted decomposition by means of a program (III) using the parameters determn. and the values determn. in the present flow of effluent water w.r.t flow vol., carbon concn. and incoming nitrogen.The rates determined by programmes (I) and (III) are approximately the same provided that the process is undisrupted. If there are significant differences between (I) and (III) these differences are used as corrective inputs to the plant.The parameters monitored are oxygen concn., fluid inlet and outlet flows, carbon concn., nitrogen input, buffer levels, gas inputs, solid content, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
