PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head step measuring method which can easily measure the recording track width, head width and head step of a computer-readable recording medium, and the computer-readable record medium with respect to a recording track width measuring method, a head width measuring method, and a head step measuring method for measuring recording track width, head width and a head step for evaluating the state of an information recording and reproducing device which records information on a beltilike record medium by a helical scan system, a recording track width measuring method, a head width measuring method and the computer-readable record medium. ;SOLUTION: While the travel speed of a magnetic tape 5 is varied, specific recording patterns A and B are recorded by recording heads 16A and 16B and then reproduced by reproducing heads 17A and 17B right after being recorded to generate reproduction signals Va and Vb; and the gradients of the characteristics of the obtained reproduction signals Va and Vb at respective parts are linearly approximated to calculate the track width, head width, and head step of the recording patterns A and B from the gradients and segments of respective parts obtained by the linear approximation.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
