PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound at a low temperature, by adding a hydroxyl group-containing compound to an alkyne, etc., in the presence of an amorphous zinc silicate catalyst, etc. SOLUTION: A compound of the formula R1 OH (R1 is H, an aliphatic or alicyclic group) is added to an acetylene or allene of formula I or formula II (R is H, an aliphatic or alicyclic group) in a gas phase by using a catalyst containing 1-40 wt.% calculated as oxide of zinc or cadmium-containing X-ray amorphous zinc silicate or cadmium silicate as an active ingredient and obtained by setting a zinc salt or a cadmium salt of an acidic organic compound decomposable at a temperature lower than 400 deg.C on amorphous silicic acid and forming the catalyst at 50-500 deg.C in the presence of hydrogen and a hydroxyl group-containing compound such as a =10C alkanol or a 2-6C diol containing 2-3 hydroxyl groups to give the objective compound of formula III or formula IV ((m) is 0 or 1).
