Birds are humanely stunned by electric current prior to positioning the head or neck for the final stunning phase. - A method for stunning poultry by passing an electric shock through the body of the bird (3) as it is being transported, comprises a first phase where an electrical current is passed via electrodes (9, 10) in through the bird's head (8) and out through another part of the body to gently stun the bird without causing pain, and a second stun phase applied to the head. An independent claim is also included for the poultry stunning apparatus.
