The present invention pertains to a system forrecovering salvageable ferrous and non-ferrous materials fromincinerated waste materials including friable, carbonaceousincineration by-products such as ash and associated ferrousmetal and aluminum and other non-ferrous metal components,comprising first crushing means for selectively comminutingcarbonaceous incineration by-products without comminutingassociated ferrous and non-ferrous metal components; firstseparating means coacting with said first crushing means forselectively separating comminuted carbonaceous incinerationby-products from ferrous and non-ferrous metal components; andfirst magnetic means for separating ferrous metal componentsfrom non-ferrous metal components.The present invention further relates to a method forrecovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metal components fromincinerated waste materials using the system of the presentinvention and to a novel crusher for selectively comminutingfriable materials without comminuting associated malleablematerials.
