The breech assembly has a block (3) which can move between the two side pieces (4,5) of a sleeve (6). At least one thrust element (9-12) is situated on each side. The thrust element has thrust faces (13-16) turned towards the rear of the assembly. The thrust faces are able to slide along corresponding thrust surfaces (18-21) on the sleeve's side pieces, transmitting efforts to them when the gun is fired. The thrust faces and the corresponding thrust surfaces are positioned so that they form an angle relative to one another of more than 90 degrees. The tip of the angle points towards the front of the breech block assembly. They are symmetrical in relation to a vertical plane passing through the block's axis (26).
