The finishing treatment for woollens and especially of animal hair, to prevent felting,uses a low temperature plasma processing with a pressure of 10-2 mbar to 10 mbar for 1-600 secs, with a high frequency discharge at a frequency of 1 kHz to 3 GHz and a power density at the discharge of 0.001-3.0 W/cm3 with, if required, an addition of non-polymerising gases. The wool material, with a moisture content of 4-40 wt%, is subjected to the plasma process before being worked into textile woven fabrics or webs. Preferably the wool material to be treated is raw wool, after the washing of the raw wool or as tops. The wool material has a water content of 5-30 wt.% and pref. 8-25 wt.%.
