Microwave sensor determines gas concentration for monitoring and control purposes. It can detect when a gas reaches a threshold concentration. Its measurement cell has gas inlet and outlet systems, and is connected to a microwave source. A signal of specified frequency and duration is delivered by the source. The signal from the microwave detector is a function of interaction between microwaves and the gas components. The signal is modulated or pulsed by intentional variation of the microwave source, measurement cell, gas or detector, and/or by other special devices. Additional generators, detectors and gases may be included.
