Spatial detection of gases and vapors in air, e.g. to detect gas leakage from natural gas or chemical industry pipelines

Spatial detection of air components is carried out using a variable frequency pulsed microwave beam and a directional microphone. Spatial detection of air components comprises emitting a bundled pulsed beam from a microwave emitter of continuously variable frequency for frequency-dependent excitation of energy absorption by certain gas molecules, the resulting pressure variations being detected by a directional microphone for determining the concentration of gas molecules present. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the above process, comprising a variable frequency microwave emitter and a directional microphone which is pivoted for changing the angle between the emitted beam and the microphone.
