PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance possibility of realizing a high electromotive force secondary battery for an electric vehicle by using such the new theory that the electromotive force of a battery is the difference between oxidation potentials in both electrodes. SOLUTION: According to the new theory, the electromotive force of the Volta cell is the difference between oxidation potentials produced by oxidation reaction of Zn and H+, and by that of Cu and H+. When both electrodes of a battery is connected with a lead wire, electrons produced by oxidation reaction flow (electric reaction). When not connected with the lead, the electron is combined with H+ to produce hydrogen (H2), and at the same time heat of reaction is produced (chemical reaction). Since energy is stored, electric energy and heat of reaction produced by this reaction must be equal. Heat of oxidation reaction of Zn and Cu is 154, 202 kcal/mole respectively, and the difference is 48 kcal/mole. Heat generation per mole of electron becomes 24 kcal/mole, and this is equivalent to 1.04 eV. This means electromotive force is 1.04 V, and this shows high agreement with the actual measurement.
