PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily select an illustration matching a character string of a docu ment by retrieving illustrations having properties matching the properties of a character string and displaying it and selecting a desired illustration out of the displayed illustrations. SOLUTION: A buffer which arranges illustrations in a RAM 7, collects illustrations in an illustration buffer against images that font images represent, and stores illustrations of matching images is stored with plural final illustration candidates that a character string images. Then, a keyword is extracted from the character string. When the keyword, the font of the character string, and the character string represent 'A Happy New Year', images of 'A Happy New Year' can be extracted and when the character string indicates an year, optimum illustrations relating to the zodiac sign of the year can be extracted. Thus, an optimum illustration is selected from a group of many usable illustrations and the user can efficiently select an illustration corresponding to a document and a character string.
