PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer material (C) obtained by combining an unsaturated side chain to a starting polymer (A), a polymer material (F) having a chemically modified side chain formed by combining a compound (D) having different types of functional groups with the newly combined unsaturated side chain, and a highly functionalized polymer material (H) obtained by combining a high functionalizing component (G) with the polymer material (F) having the chemically modified side chain. ;SOLUTION: The polymer material (C) is obtained by subjecting a starting polymer (A) to irradiation of an ionizing radiation in the presence of a compound having a conjugated double bond such as 1,3-butadiene, thereby causing an unsaturated side chain to be combined. The polymer material (F) has a chemically modified side chain formed by combining a compound (D) having a functional group with the unsaturated side chain-combined polymer material (C), and the highly functionalized polymer material (H) is obtained by combining a high functionalizing component (G) with the polymer material (F) having the chemically modified side chain. The polymer material (C) is not sacrificed with mechanical properties, chemical properties and the like, from which there can be obtained the polymer material (F) having the chemically modified side chain with a greater value in use.
