An assembly for a container handling system includes a base portion 9 which in use is oriented transversely on a tray or deck 1. A telescoping boom means 12 pivots about a central point on base portion 9. Ram means 15 or 16, each are linked between base portion 9 and boom means 12 and control pivoting of boom means 12 when lifting a container. Boom means 12 includes a lower member 14 and a retractable member 28. Ram means 15, 16 are linked to lower member 14.
