PURPOSE: An improved portable compact disc player and a method for regenerating data by using the compact disc player are provided to regenerate selectively and repeatedly by using a plurality of number keys and function keys after assigning identification number per word, sentence or page unit on an optical disc. CONSTITUTION: In an optical disc for studying, a voice data is recorded on an optical disc in which a serial identification number is assigned by the unit of a word, sentence or page, and position information for the identification number is recorded in a read area of the optical disc. In a portable compact disc player, a manipulation panel(108) having a plurality of function keys is provided for carrying out section-selected regeneration or repeated section-selected regeneration by designating a regeneration section by the unit of word, sentence or page with a plurality of function keys. When the section-selected regeneration is carried out, a display panel(110) displays character information for the selected identification number and function key selection.
