The system has a first unit (10) that receives actuation signals from a brake control element operated by the driver and determines command parameters for controlling the wheel brakes on the basis of the actuation signals. Further units (12,14,16,18) associated with the wheel brakes convert the command signals into control signals for the wheel brakes. The further units are associated individually with individual wheel brakes and each contains a microcomputer system that monitors itself.
