The machine to maintain road verges, and move the soil from the outer side of the verge (90) towards the edge of the road (80), gives a continuous scraping action at a number of closely packed points. The soil moved towards the road surface (80) is shifted to the verge (90) and packed in place. The maintenance vehicle (10) has a number of units (25) at the side with rotating scrapers (26), which spin the verge soil towards the road edge. A deflector (28) near the rotating scrapers (26) keeps the detached soil at the verge edge, to be tamped down.
