The switching regulator has an inductance (L) with one connection connected via first and second switches (S1,S2) to the regulator input and to earth and another connector connected via third and fourth switches (S3,S4) to the regulator output and to earth, whereby all switches are controlled. The regulator has an upward mode and a downward mode enabled by suitable switch settings and periodic control by a switch control circuit (5). A pulse duration modulator varies the duty cycle of the periodic control to correct deviations in the output voltage. Mode switchover occurs when the duty cycle approaches 100 or 0 per cent. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a switching regulator.
