The lifting magnet has a housing containing a coil former (16), wound with a magnetic energizing coil (14) and provided with an opening receiving an axially displaced armature (22), which is held in its end position by a permanent magnet (24). This is contained within a second housing (26), attached to the first housing so that when the magnetic coil is energized a magnetic field is obtained within the second housing, for neutralizing the magnetic field of the permanent magnet.
