A system for monitoring a region (10,11) on the side of a vehicle (3) in a dynamic traffic environment has the vehicle travelling on a roadway (1) with a certain speed. The system has devices to change the size of the monitored region according to the state of the roadway and/or the speed of the vehicle. The devices change the width of the monitored region according to the state of the roadway. The devices increase the monitored region with increasing width of the traffic lane (2) on which the vehicle travels. The devices change the monitored region according to the position of the vehicle on the traffic lane of the roadway on which the vehicle travels.
