Preparing a flotation agent acting as a collector comprises: (a) mixing a metal-containing non water-soluble oxidation catalyst with a thermoplastic polymer, (b) dissolving the collector in water, mixing the mixture obtained in (a) with the collector-water solution, and separating the collector-water solution from the mixture before the collector-water solution is subjected to flotation. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the above process comprising a housing (1) having an inlet (11, 12) on its upper side for the collector-water solution (21) and an outlet (8, 9) on its lower side for the collector-water solution. The housing also has a container (3) surrounding a chamber (2). The chamber is connected to the inlet and contains the metal-containing non water-soluble oxidation catalyst (18) and has openings (23) in its base (22) through which the collector-water solution exits into the container and retains the oxidation catalyst.
