Procedure involves determination of a number of closed paths in an X-ray image or an image derived from an X-ray image and then selection of one path from the number of closed paths as a contour dependent on the contrast on either side of the closed path. The closed paths are determined by determination of contour point candidates, using a high pass filter or gradient image, from the spatial path of the pixels of the X-ray image and determination of a number of line candidates which are comprised of a series of contour points and formation of a closed path from line segments (maximum four).
