The assembly for the automatic cleaning of building windows and facades has at least one cable (4) held at one end by a motor-powered winder (18) at the suspended cleaning unit (1) to wind a given length of the cable, and a motor-powered cable winder is at the building roof. The cleaning unit (1) is suspended from the building cable winder (2) by two cables (4), offset sideways from each other, each secured to a powered cable winder (18) at each side of it. The building cable winder (2) moves the cleaning unit horizontally along the building, and the on-board cable winders (18) move the cleaning unit (1) vertically. The cleaning unit (1) movements are controlled to give the required position and maintain its horizontal level.
