The braking force control system has a vehicle operating condition detector, an engine braking force control drive which varies the engine braking force and a wheel braking force control drive which varies a wheel braking force. A control device is connected to the condition detector and the control drives. The control device determines a target total braking force on the basis of the vehicle operating conditions, a target transfer ratio and a target engine output power on the basis of the target total braking force. The control device calculates an engine braking force on the basis of the operating conditions. It extracts a fast component of a change in speed of the target braking force. A target wheel braking force is determined from this component. The control device controls the wheel braking drive such that the wheel braking force corresponds to the target value.
