The system includes an arrangement (1) for estimating a vehicle position, and an accident detection arrangement (2) for detecting an accident through a manual activation and/or an on-board sensor. A remote communication arrangement (3) is provided for notifying information about the accident type, the position of the vehicle, and the condition of the driver to emergency services, such as the police or fire brigade. An accident alarm arrangement (4) makes vehicles and pedestrians nearby the accident scene aware about the accident to received their attention and help.
