The control arrangement performs fuel cut-off on the engine (10) until the vehicle reaches a defined state during deceleration, whereby a torque converter (20) bridging coupling (18) is connected. A forced resumption device (32) interrupts fuel cut-off control and forcibly resumes control of the fuel cut-off controller if a rapid deceleration detector detects a sudden vehicle deceleration. An Independent claim is also included for a fuel cut-off control method.
