The gear selection switch has only one control element (3) for setting the gear selection. This single control element enables each gear setting available in the automatic transmission to be selected. The currently selected gear is shown in alphanumeric or symbolic form on an associated display (4). The control element and display are connected to an electronic circuit connected to a vehicle data bus that carries the control commends from the control element to the gearbox.
