A fiber preform (11) is made from a fibrous block (100), by forming at least one cutout (12, 13) in the block, in order to leave a space (15, 16) between two parts of the preform corresponding to the blades or turns of a spring (19) to manufacture, and the preform is densified by a material constituting the matrix of the thermostructural composite material. The space between two parts of the preform is formed by the removal of material, preferably after consolidation of the preform, or by formation of a slot, the spacing between the lips of the slot and is held in the opened-out state.
