An aluminum nitride and metal assembly, has an interface of a rare earth metal, scandium and/or yttrium nitride. An Independent claim is also included for a method of assembling aluminum nitride and metallic elements by: (a) brazing at 800-1050 deg C using a rare earth metal, scandium and/or yttrium alloy brazing foil; (b) depositing a material selected from rare earth metal, scandium, yttrium and their nitrides in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere onto the aluminum nitride element, heat treating at 1000-1900 deg C, applying the metallic element and heat treating at 800-1050 deg C; or(c) depositing a rare earth metal, scandium and/or yttrium nitride onto the aluminum nitride element, contacting the deposit with the metallic element and heat treating at 800-1050 deg C. Preferred Features: The metallic element comprises copper or a copper alloy containing one or more of silver, platinum, palladium and gold.
