Buoy (11) has a sensor for detection of a signal arising from a noise source and processing means for treatment of the signal so that it can be divided into a useful part and an ambient noise signal. Further means are available for triggering an alarm signal if the detected noise indicates a possible noise source. The buoy has a drop line (13) on the end of which is an arrangement of hydrophones (14) with a path (14) for detection of the ambient noise and a path (17) for detection of a useful signal.
