Steam ironing system has a central reservoir (9) and an electrical water pump (11) to supply water to a steamer (15) or a steam iron (18). Separate braided cables (16,19) are permanently connected to the steamer and steam iron and plugs (17) and (20) are provided at the ends of the cables for connection to a socket (14). The steam iron and steamer have electrical switches (21, 22) for controlling the pump operation during use via the flexible cable. A central adjustable flow rate controller is arranged to set a desired flow rate of water between the reservoir and the steamer or steam iron.
