Transversal motor/propelling unit comprises internal combustion engine (12) driving hydraulic pump (26) and belt (36) type speed changer (22) through torque convertor (14). Speed changer (22) drives bridge (18) and road wheels (20) through double epicyclic gear train (24). Electronic controller (47) controls speed changer pulleys (32,34), and also controls brakes and clutches on gear train (24) that shares common shaft (54) with speed changer output pulley (34).
