Method for producing a population of mammalian neurons and/or smooth muscle cells comprising contacting at least one mammalian neural stem cell with a culture medium containing one or more growth factors from the TGF-&bgr; super family and detecting the differentiation of stem cell to a population of neurons or smooth muscle cells.
