Neutrons are scattered incoherently out of a collimated primary neutron beam 1 by means of a scattering foil, which may be vanadium, polyethylene or a titanium isotope. A portion of the scattered neutrons 5 strike a neutron detecting scintillator 6 which is arranged outside the primary neutron beam 1. The beam monitor 2 can be constructed so that the spatial distribution and the spectral distribution, especially in the case of pulsed neutron beams, may be immediately determined.
