PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metallic material that reduces formation of thrombus and growth of smooth muscle cells, a medical device for cardiovascular system using the metallic material, and a biocompatible metallic medical material that is substantially improved in anti-thrombus activity and biocompatibility and its manufacture. SOLUTION: The material comprises a metal base, a thin film of gold or silver covering the surface of the metal base, a functional sulfur compound adhering on the thin film of gold or silver, a surface modulated metallic medical material containing a biocompatible substance such as heparin or an estradiol derivative bonded chemically with a functional group of the sulfur compound, and a stent, heart valves, and a catheter using the medical material. The manufacturing process of the surface modulated metallic medical material comprises (1) to cover the thin film of gold or silver on the surface of the metal base, (2) to adhere the functional sulfur compound on the thin film of gold or silver, and (3) to bond a physiological activator chemically onto the functional group of the sulfur compound.
