In the present invention there is described a microbiological process for the preparation of a heteroaromatic carboxylic acid or its physiologically tolerated salts of the formulae I and II, wherein Re1 and Re2 are identical or different and each denotes a hydrogen or halogen atom, and X denotes a nitrogen atom or -CH-. Biotransformation is carried out in such a manner that first heteroaromatic nitriles of the general formulae III and IV, in which Re1m Re2 and X are as specified above, are transformed as a substrate by making use of microorganisms of the Alcaligenes strain employing 2-cyanpyridine, which microorganisms have been cultured prior biotransformation in the presence of a dicarboxylic acid, a tricarboxylic acid or a carbohydrate, to a corresponding carboxylic acid and the latter is the optionally converted to physiologically usable salts.
