Transgenic avians containing replication-defective retroviral vectors and methods for tissue specific synthesis of protein in eggs laid by the avian or female progeny thereof.

A transgenic avian comprising a transgene and control elements operatively-linked tot eh transgene. The control elements direct the synthesis of the transgene product in the egg white of an egg laid by the transgenic avian or female progeny thereof. Also disclosed is the method of producing the transgenic avian which comprises the steps of: a) making an opening in an avian egg which is not more than seven days old and which contains an embryo, so as to expose a blastoderm, b) microinjecting through the opening into an area in close proximity t o the blastoderm, a solution containing a replication-defective retroviral vector comprising a transgene and control elements operatively-linked and capable of directing the synthesis of the transgene product in egg yolk, wherein the control elements comprise a promoter, a 5' untranslated region, a signal sequence and uptake sequence, c) sealing the opening after microinjection, d) incubating the egg until the avian is hatched from the egg.
