The preparation of microporous carbon membrane comprises deposition on a carbon substrate of a polymer solution obtained by dissolving of solid polyether imide in a liquid formed by a solvent with or without addition of non-solvent material. Introduction into a liquid precipitates the polymer, to form the polymer membrane covering one surface of the substrate. EMBODIMENT - After drying in air, the membrane is heated under vacuum to a temperature at which the polymer decomposes with transformation to a carbon film.
