Disclosed are articles having structured(i.e., rough) surfaces which inhibit proliferation and adhesionof eukaryotic cells such as fibroblasts. The structuredsurfaces have elevations with an average height of from 50 nmto 10 µm and an average separation of from 50 nm to 10 µm, andare made of materials having a surface energy of at least 20mN/m as measured in an unstructured (i.e., smooth) form. Thestructured surfaces may be produced by a variety of processessuch as an embossing process and the articles may be used e.g.as cell-culture vessels.
