The gear shift device has several shift fork bridges (e.g. 17) capable of relative axial motion on an axially movable shift rod (13), causing a shift pin to act on a shift shaft. A bolt (22) is fitted on the shift rod, about which pivots an angled lever (23). One arm (24) of the lever engages with the shift rod via a bolt-fork connection (25, 26). The other arm of the lever is supported via an arc slot and bolt connection (28, 29) on a fixed point (14) in the casing, so that a movement of the bridge to engage fifth gear carries the shift rod with it. A movement of the bridge to engage reverse gear holds the shift rod in a fixed position but turns a rocker (34) to engage reverse gear.
