A first data stream (4) from the first network is converted into a second data stream (6-14) for the second network and/or vice versa. The first data stream comprises a sequence of first structural elements (20) and a second data stream - a sequence of second structural elements. The latter comprise the data of the first structural elements in an unchanged form as well as data carrying reading information. The first structural elements (20) are AAL2-structural elements embedded in ATM cells (16). The first data stream (4) carries many sub-channels and data in the first structural elements correspond to different sub-channels of the different second data streams (6-14). Each second data stream is transmitted in a separate TDM channel. The second network is an ISDN network. Both first and second data streams have different bit rates.
