The optical system has an image viewing device (15), e.g. an eyepiece or a video camera, fitted into a seating (14) at the proximal end of the endoscope and adjusted relative to an associated light conductor (12), for correcting the image position and the image center, via an adapter (16) with an external contour (17) allowing fixing in the seating and an axial bore (18) receiving the image viewing device.
