Thread twist compensation, is provided by turning supply spool in opposite sense to that of thread unwinding from its interior, whilst spool is driven simultaneously by the act of thread withdrawal. The supply spool (1) is set down onto the rotary carrier (3). Thread (2) is withdrawn upwardly from the spool center, preferably being brought down below the spool carrier by guide pulleys (6, 7, 9). Between pulleys, the thread passes through a braking unit (8). It then passes repeatedly back and forth around a drum of the spool carrier (3) and an inclined return roller (10), carrying it downwardly. As a result of thread withdrawal by the consumer unit, spool carrier and supply spool are rotated. They turn in the opposite direction to that of thread withdrawal from the spool. This removes most or all of the twist to be eliminated. An Independent claim is included for the unit carrying out the corresponding process, in which the equipment described in mounted on a common frame (5).
