The plunger pump unit has two co-axially opposed pump units(3,4) between which is constructed a free-piston engine(2) equipped with a stepped piston(5), acting as a two-stroke internal combustion engine. The stepped piston is directly or indirectly connected to the plungers(10) of the pump units. The pump units constructed as piston and cylinder units each have a pump head(29), a suction and pressure valve in co-axial arrangement, and a suction chamber(11). The suction chambers of the pump units are interconnected.
