The device has a smaller buffer container inside a larger cistern (12). A supply line (16) for rainwater (R) opens into the cistern and a supply line for fresh water (F) opens into the buffer container. A controller (20) controls the fresh water supply according to the level in the buffer container. A supply line delivers water from the buffer container to a consumer. The base (40) of the buffer container is spaced from the base (32) of the cistern. The rainwater supply line passes through the base of the buffer container and opens into the base of the cistern. Rainwater is conducted between the bases of the containers. Flow conductors are provided, so that rain water flows upwards vertically from the base of the cistern.
