Clarification basin contains a fixed bed (32) which forms a microbial film and a water inlet (16) which feeds in water from a pre-clarification basin. (10). An aeration system (36, 38, 46, 48) feeds air or oxygen into the bottom of the bed. The bed is supported by a perforated floor (30) above a funnel into which sludge particles and dead microorganisms are discharged. The base and funnel connect with a riser pipe (50) connected to an outlet (18). A stand pipe (34) in the center of the fixed bed extends from its floor to a pint above the water level. The base of the pipe is connected to a suction pipe (40) which extends beyond the perforated floor. An aeration membrane (36) is mounted near the base of the pipe.
