A number of piezo crash sensors are arranged about the body of the car. Their output signals, proportional to the strength of impact at their location, are processed to obtain individual weighting signals (W1-W6). This obtained from a summation of the amplitudes and the amplitude of at least one derivative with time of the individual sensor signals. From the pattern (truth table) provided by these weighting signals the severity of the collision is indicated by the signal level above or below a threshold (SW)
