The application method for a high viscosity ink uses an ink roller (1) which stores the ink at its mantle surface (5), for transfer via an intermediate application roller (2) to a printing plate cylinder (3). The ink is supplied to the mantle surface of the ink roller via a large number of ink channels (6), communicating with the hollow interior of the ink roller.
