A global positioning system (GPS) receiver having a SiRF chipset and an active GPS antenna is provided remotely. A compact disc-read only memory (CD-ROM) drive is also provided remotely to read a CD-ROM (4) that stores road maps. A base unit (2) is arranged in a metal housing. A CPU module that is formed as a card PC or AS IC is operated with a QNX operating system in a DOC or a memory. An Independent claim is also included for a GPS navigation unit.
