Combustible gas (2) is mixed with air (1) in a mixing device (3) to form an ignitable processing gas (4,4') that is condensed in a condenser (6), heated in a regenerator (11) and then burnt. Combustion occurs in a hot part of the regenerator through contact with its hot surface. An Ericsson hot air engine starts up with an electrical ignition device (13,14) that enables ignition of the processing gas even if the regenerator is still cold.
